Speak Up Syllabus


Introductory Verse Speaking for 3 - 6 year olds

Introductory Level 1 Age 3 (the teacher is allowed in the room)

Candidates must speak from memory one own choice poem of 4 lines or more.

Introductory Level 2 Age 3/4 (no teacher in the room)

Candidates must speak from memory one own choice poem of 4 lines or more.
Candidates will answer questions about the poem.

Introductory Level 3 Age 3/4/5

Candidates must speak from memory two own choice poems of 4 lines or more.

Introductory Level 4 Age 4/5/6

Candidates must speak from memory one own choice poem of 4 lines or more
AND
Choose one poem from below.

  1. My Puppy by S.G.
  2. Teddy Bear by S.G.
  3. Dragon by S.G.

Introductory Speech for 3 - 6 year olds

Introductory Level 1 Age 3 (the teacher is allowed in the room)

Candidates must talk about their favourite toy to the examiner - please bring toy into the room (so not too big)

Introductory Level 2 Age 3/4 (no teacher in the room)

Candidates must speak about favourite toy to the examiner - please bring toy into the room (so not too big)

Introductory Level 3 Age 3/4/5

Candidates must talk about their favourite book with the examiner. Please bring book into the exam room with you.

Introductory Level 4 Age 4/5/6

Candidates should retell their favourite fairy tale in their own words or talk about their favourite television programme. (max 3 mins)

Junior Grade 1 Age 5/6/7

Candidates must speak from memory one of the following poems and one poem of their own choice (or two from the list).

  1. Cat Kisses by Bobbi Katz
  2. Little Silver Aeroplane
  3. Five Little Owls
  4. Shell by Gareth Owen
To talk with the examiner about the poems

Junior Grade 2 Age 6/7/8

Candidates must speak from memory one of the following poems and one poem of their own choice (or two from the list).

  1. Isn't it Amazing by Max Fatchen
  2. The Queen of Hearts
  3. Bed in Summer by Robert Louis Stevenson
  4. Water Everywhere by Valerie Bloom

Junior Grade 3 Age 7/8/9

  2. Piece from a book by either Roald Dahl or Beatrix Potter (not more than 2 mins)
  3. Talk about word pictures

Junior Grade 2 Age 6/7/8

Candidates must speak from memory

  1. Own choice poem
  2. Piece from a book by J K Rowling or Hans Christian Anderson - (2 mins max)
  3. Talk about Facial Expression

Junior Grade 3 Age 7/8/9

  1. Own choice poem
  2. Piece from a book by Jacqueline Wilson or the Brothers Grimm (2 mins max)
  3. Talk about Pausing

Junior Grade 4 Age 8/9/10

  1. Own choice poem
  2. Piece from a book by J K Rowling or Michael Morpurgo 2 mins max
  3. Talk about Pitch, Power and Pace

Junior Grade 5 Age 9/10/11

  1. Own choice poem
  2. Piece from a book by Philip Pullman or Charles Ogden or Diana Wynne Jones - 2 mins max
  3. Talk about Speech Sounds


Junior Level Reading for ages 4 - 11years

The candidate must prepare two pieces, one poem and one piece of prose. Copies must be taken into the exam room.

Junior Reading Grade 1 Age 4/5/6/7

Candidates must

  1. Read a short poem by A.A.Milne or Eleanor Farjeon
  2. Read a piece from a book by Disney (any version) or Roger Hargreaves
Max 2 mins each

Junior Reading Grade 2 Age 6/7/8

Candidates must

  1. Read a short poem by Wes Magee or 'anon'
  2. Read a piece from a book by E.B.White or Eoin Colfer
Max 2 mins each

Junior Grade 3 Age 7/8/9

Candidates must

  1. Read a poem by Ian Serrailleir or Jack Prelutsky
  2. Read a piece from a book by Oscar Wilde or Lewis Carroll
Max 2 mins each piece

Junior Reading Grade 4 Age 8/9/10

Candidates must

  1. Read a poem by E.V.Rieu or Wendy Cope
  2. Read a piece of prose from a book by J.K.Rowling or from a book of a film
  3. To sight read a piece of prose chosen by the examiner
Max 2 mins each piece

Junior Reading Grade 5 Age 9/10/11

Candidates must

  1. Read a short poem by Walter de la Mare or Brian Patten
  2. Read a piece from a book by Roald Dahl or Aesop
  3. To sight read a piece of prose chosen by the examiner
Max 2 mins each piece


Fees for Junior Grades

  • Grade 1 - £14.50
  • Grade 2 - £14.50
  • Grade 3 - £15.00
  • Grade 4 - £15.50
  • Grade 5 - £15.50
