Speak Up Academy

The Speak Up Academy of Speech and Drama is based in Dorset and specialises in teaching young children and adults to speak clearly. The Speak Up Academy also runs the Speaking Kids programmes world wide. It also runs the Speaking Kids programmes world wide. Unlike a lot of examining boards we will happily exam children as young as three. Please see our syllabus for more details.

As a teacher of elocution for more years than I care to remember I often found it frustrating that I had young children who really enjoyed reciting little rhymes to anyone who would listen but they were unable to take exams along with their older brothers and sisters. The few examination boards that did examine young children from the age of 4 only allowed (because of the age restraints) them to take one exam a year.

We do not encourage children to take exams just for the sake of it but if a child enjoys reciting and is capable then we see no harm in allowing them to participate and get their own certificates.

Speak Up will send examiners to most parts of the UK. All we ask is that the total fees are £180 or more.

Unlike other exam boards we allow the teacher to time table her own candidates. We will agree the start time with you and calculate the finish time and then the teacher can arrange the order (although we will do it if you would rather).

Teachers receive the results on the day and the certificates follow within 14 days.

Children need 65% to pass, 75% for Distinction and 85% for Honours.

Speak Up Academy will send you sufficient report slips for you to fill in the name of the pupil and the name of the poem or poems to be recited. Please ensure that the pupil brings into the exam room, along with the report slip, a copy of all own choice poems.

The New Speaking Kids Programme

The Speak Up Academy has introduced a new programme which encourages children to speak clearly and confidently in sentences.

We train teachers around the world to run their own Speaking Kids sessions. At the moment we have enough teachers in South Africa as we prepare for franchising early next year. For more details of the course please click here.
