Washington's Birthday Speech
If you have to give a Washington's Birthday Speech, talk or presentation you will ned to know as much as possible about the history of this holiday.
Washington's Birthday is a United States federal holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February (so this year it is on February 20th) in honour of George Washington, the first President of the United States. It is also commonly known as Presidents Day (sometimes spelled Presidents' Day or President's Day).
Important parts of a speech
Every speech must be in three parts, a beginning, a middle and a conclusion.
The beginning of your speech should explain when Washington's Birthday Holiday is, why it is celebrated and the historical significance of it.
The middle part of the speech could give examples of how different parts of the United Sates celebrate Washington's Birthday. How do you and your family and friends celebrate it?
Do you cook special food? Do you go to special places? Do you have parties?
The conclusion to your Washington's Birthday speech should say how you think Washington's Birthday will be celebrated in the future. Do you think it will continue to be an important date or will it just be an excuse for a holiday?
I've written it, what now?
Once you have finished your speech, read it out loud and if you have a time limit make sure it is not too long or too short.
When you read it out loud, read it slowly. One of the easiest ways to do this is to make sure you stop at commas, and fullstops. Your listeners need time to take in what you are saying and you need time to put expression into your Washington's Birthday speech.
Don't look down at your notes the whole time, look up at your listeners when you get to an important word or phrase. Your articulation needs to be very clear and therefore every 'th' sound should have your tongue just showing between your teeth.
